The Group's new chlor-alkali plant in Balabhadrapuram will lead to significant employment generation in Andhra Pradesh

The sustainable way to make chlor-alkali

The Aditya Birla Group commissioned its first chlor-alkali manufacturing site in Andhra Pradesh, taking Aditya Birla Chemicals' total manufacturing sites to eight. The plant, situated in Balabhadrapuram in East Godavari district, is designed to become the largest single-location chlor-alkali site in the country.

The cutting-edge facility built at an investment of Rs1,000 crore, currently has the capacity to produce about 150,000 tons per annum of caustic and chlorine derivatives. The plant will manufacture caustic soda, hydrochloric acid, chlorine, sodium hypochloride, stable bleaching powder, chlorinated paraffin, mono chloroacetic acid, etc, which are vital inputs into a number of industrial sectors.

The state-of-the-art plant serves as a testament to the Group’s steadfast commitment to sustainable operational ethos. Based on best-in-class German technology, the plant uses environmental-friendly membrane cell chlor-alkali technology.

The facility is powered by renewable energy sources and has the lowest power consumption in the region. The plant also boasts the most advanced zero liquid discharge facility in the industry.

The chlor-alkali plant will lead to significant employment creation, both directly and indirectly. From the current employment level of around 1,000 employees, the talent pool is expected to cross over 2,400 once the last phase of the plant is commissioned. The plant’s intake is also expected to lead to skill development in the local community.

In addition to augmenting the chlor-alkali production capacity, the Balabhadrapuram plant also has the potential to transform the region and economy of the state. Co-products manufactured at the facility have the potential to catalyse growth in several downstream sectors such as pharmaceuticals, agro chemicals, food-processing, aquaculture etc.
