Reshaping the future through education 

When Indian start-ups Pixxel and Digantara launched their satellites on a SpaceX Transporter-12 rocket from the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California on January 14, 2025, they heralded a transformative new chapter in India’s space odyssey.&nbsp;By putting three of its Firefly satellites in orbit, Pixxel became the first private spacetech company in India to have its own constellation of the world’s highest-resolution commercial hyperspectral satellites. Digantara, too, scored a first by launching Space Camera for Object Tracking or SCOT, the world’s first commercial situational space awareness (SSA) satellite for the surveillance of objects as small as 5cm orbiting the earth.Founded by Anirudh Sharma, Tanveer Ahmed and Rahul Rawat, Digantara intends to make space operations safer by writing a new playbook for space navigation and traffic management given the growing congestion in space. Meanwhile, Pixxel’s founders Awais Ahmed and Kshitij Khandelwal are building an advanced diagnostic system for Earth that will redefine how we understand and safeguard our planet and its resources.Giving wing to their path-breaking flight is the Aditya Birla Group’s venture capital firm, Aditya Birla Ventures (ABV). Founded by Aryaman Vikram Birla, ABV invests in new age businesses of tomorrow that are led by outstanding founding teams.&nbsp;ABV acquired a minor stake in Digantara’s Series A1 funding round in 2024. And it has backed Pixxel with an investment in 2023.&nbsp;Private sector participation in the Indian space economy has been on an upswing ever since the central government founded the Indian National Space Research Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) in 2020. There are <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://pib.gov.in/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=2027137">nearly 200 space start-ups in the country today</a>. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) expects the country’s space economy to <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.business-standard.com/industry/news/india-aims-10-share-in-global-space-economy-in-10-yrs-isro-chief-somanath-124082001084_1.html">grow from around $9 billion today to $45 billion in 10 years</a>. India has <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://theprint.in/ground-reports/digantara-pixxel-are-inspired-by-elon-musk-this-will-drive-india-inc-space-dreams/2468683">a mere 2 per cent share of the global commercial space market currently.&nbsp;</a>Space start-ups like Pixxel and Digantara are eager to tap this opportunity with support from investors such as Aditya Birla Ventures.Incidentally, both Awais, who is Pixxel’s CEO, and Kshitij, its CTO, founded the company in 2018 as students at the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS Pilani). They were part of the student satellite team on campus and collaborated with ISRO scientists on projects. Awais secured a master’s degree in mathematics in 2019, while Khandelwal graduated the same year with a BE in Electrical and Electronics Engineering.Five years later, Pixxel has soared into space. With the Fireflies in orbit, the Pixxel team is “excited to map the invisible, detect the undetectable and pave the way to protecting our planet’s beauty and its future,” states Awais in a LinkedIn post. Incidentally, most of the team members had never built a satellite before.The compact but powerful Fireflies – three more are slated to go up in orbit shortly – will beam down earth-sensing data that has not been available at this level of resolution and frequency before. That’s because their hyperspectral imaging technology takes what Awais calls an “MRI of the planet”.&nbsp;The Firefly constellation is designed to provide global coverage every 24 hours and deliver critical climate and Earth insights with near real-time data collection. Pixxel’s in-house next-gen Earth observation studio, Aurora, analyses this data for applications in sectors ranging from agriculture, energy and mining to infrastructure and defence. The start-up has over 60 clients already, including US space agency NASA, India’s Ministry of Agriculture, mining major Rio Tinto, and British Petroleum.Like Pixxel, Digantara too was born in a college dorm in 2020. Inspired by their friend Tanveer, who ran a satellite club in his Bengaluru college, Anirudh and Rahul, both engineering students at Lovely Professional University in Punjab, decided to follow suit and build a nano-satellite under an ISRO Student Satellite Launch Programme. After a piece of debris crashed into their student satellite, the trio began to consider how to make space safer.&nbsp;The result was Digantara, a new age space cartographer. Their SCOT satellite is already setting new benchmarks in space technology and precision. Digantara intends to use a network of nanosatellites and cloud-based analytics platform to ensure the safety of spacecraft. By tracking every single object in orbit, the founders are also building maps for space with their pioneering Space – Mission Assurance Platform or Space-MAP. In short, they are developing the foundational infrastructure for safer space operations and space traffic management.Pixxel and Digantara have taken their first step in space, paving the way for other spacetech start-ups. Aditya Birla Ventures propels SpaceTech flight of Pixxel and Digantara

Satya Ranjan Doloi is a security guard but what he safeguards today is more precious than mere brick and mortar. Satya has a deep love for knowledge and books. And that has changed his life as well as that of many of the poor children in his neighbourhood.&nbsp;Hailing from a village in the Sundarbans, Satya could not study or get a college degree because of family financial troubles. He came to Kolkata looking for work and joined <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/kolkata/53-year-old-security-guard-runs-10000-book-library-at-n-kol-park/articleshow/98289609.cms">Jagat Mukherjee Park in north Kolkata as a security guard in 2010.&nbsp;</a>When he found an unoccupied room at the park, he took a bold step. Satya put in Rs 2,700 of his own meagre salary , and set up the room as a home for a tiny collection of books and magazines. Over time, he built shelves from discarded wood and bought fans and lights. He worked multiple jobs, and the earnings went into building up his informal library.&nbsp;Udyaan Library has now grown to 15,000 books, a significant collection. “No one around here sells old books anymore, they donate it to me,” says Satya. “They know I look after the books like my own children. I wanted them to stop begging and I wanted to give them a way to learn,” says Satya.Indeed, Satya’s library serves as the embodiment of a community resource: Books are donated by well-wishers, and books are lent free to underprivileged children.&nbsp;“‘I want them to read. A ‘guard’ian of books and learning

Often one person can change the destiny of many. Here’s an inspiring story about a man who sold his own land and house to create a home for over 80 orphans.Farmer suicides are a grim reality in India’s agriculture sector. Unable to bear the burden of heavy debts caused mainly by volatile crop prices and the vagaries of unpredictable rains and floods, farmers take the path of suicide as the only way out. They leave behind families who are devastated by circumstances beyond their control.This is where Govardhan Darde stepped in. “I found children who had been abandoned or whose parents had died by suicide. They were forced to beg on the streets. Often they found themselves embroiled in criminal activities.”&nbsp;<div class="video-responsive"><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ZKpgX1JsmNs" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></div>&nbsp;Govardhan could understand and empathise. He himself came from a family of sugarcane workers. With no money to fund his dream of a college education, he worked to look after his family. “I didn’t want these young children to have the same misfortune,” he says.He sold his land and house to raise money for an NGO called Pasayadan Seva Prakalp. Set up in a shed made of tin sheets, the NGO offered abandoned children something no one else had -- a shelter, with free food, clothing and, best of all, learning and books.There were plenty of challenges, not the least of which was funding to keep the shelter going. Cash flow was a concern, with merchants refusing to give credit as they doubted his ability to pay his bills. Govardhan worked hard to keep over 80 children in government schools, giving them an education as a tool to power their dreams. The children in his care now have a future to explore.Like the children, Govardhan has his own dreams. Through a streamlined waste management approach ABFRL has achieved, and continues to ensure, ‘Zero Waste to Landfill across all facilities’. Its manufacturing units have digitalised product lifecycle management with platforms providing complete concept-to-shelf connectivity, in addition to an array of other eco-friendly measures for packaging, plastics and warehousing.</li><li>Louis Philippe’s hemp and hemp-blend shirts, organic cotton products and shirts are made out of recycled threads. Its Green Crest denim wear is crafted from PULCRA fabric, made from recycled cotton that needs less water for dyeing. Laser drying, use of zero chemicals and adopting plastic-free packaging has also shrunk the brand’s carbon footprint.</li><li>Shantnu &amp; Nikhil are eco-conscious couturiers who offer a buyback programme that promotes the re-own, re-love, reuse approach.</li><li>Jaypore, India’s leading destination for craft-based artisanal goods – follows a made-to-order model, has a repurposed clothing line, upcycles Banarasi and Ikat Patola sarees into lehenga-cholis and kurtas, and uses heirloom brocade sarees and sustainable packaging material like muslin.</li><li>Pantaloons collects, reuses, recycles or repurposes cartons from its warehouses, rather than discarding them as waste, with 6 lakh+ cartons reused in FY23 alone.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;</li></ul><h3>Weaving technology into greener textiles</h3>Aditya Birla Group has multiple businesses in the textile industry as well, under its flagship company <a href="/businesses/companies/grasim-industries-limited/">Grasim Industries Limited</a>. Grasim’s businesses are at the forefront of adopting the latest planet-friendly processes and technologies to achieve zero waste to landfills.<ul style="list-style-type:circle;"><li>Birla Cellulose manufactures 100% natural, man-made and biodegradable cellulosic fibres that come from renewable wood, using a closed-loop process and environmentally efficient technologies that recycle raw materials and conserve natural resources. In FY24, Birla Cellulose disposed of nearly 90% waste through recycling or reuse. Some of its new generation products include Livaeco, Liva Reviva, Birla Excel and Birla Sunshades. It is also the pioneer of source traceability through blockchain-enabled GreenTrack™ technology.&nbsp;</li><li>Jaya Shree Textiles manufactures linen under India’s largest linen fabric brand – <a href="/businesses/brands/linen-club/">Linen Club</a> - &nbsp;using every part of the flax plant in the production process, thus ensuring zero waste. The company has further innovated to upcycle flax waste into blended yarn and linen rich fabric blends as well as ready-to-wear apparel.</li><li>Century Rayon produces a fashion yarn under the brand name Raysil®, contributing to a sustainable shift in the industry through its complete range of cellulosic, 100% natural and biodegradable Viscose Filament Yarn. &nbsp;</li></ul>On the International Day of Zero Waste for 2025, UNEP and UN-Habitat have called on governments, businesses and consumers alike to embrace a zero-waste approach to tackle the waste pollution crisis. <h3>Surfing the good wave/ Can surfboards become more sustainable?</h3>Surfboards that use recyclamine, an eco-friendly epoxy resin, are helping to save the oceans from marine pollutionSurfers are people who enjoy their direct contact with nature. It is therefore in their best interests to protect the environment in which they spend much of their time – the oceans. Paradoxically, the equipment they use is heavily dependent on the petrochemical industry. Apart from the hazardous waste that is released during manufacture, it is also impossible to recycle these boards at their end-of-life. Often surfboards are considered an ecologically hostile product, born out of unsustainable practices and leaching pollutants into the sea or landfills when discarded.&nbsp; &nbsp;<h3>Environmental footprint</h3><img class="image_resized image-style-align-left" style="width:25%;" src="https://www.cms.adityabirla.com/uploads/hand_of_human_is_holding_green_leaf_with_carbon_footprint_5729975425.webp" alt="hand-of-human-is-holding-green-leaf-with-carbon-footprint.webp">The lifecycle of a standard surfboard is about five years. &nbsp;With proper maintenance, a surfboard can be made to last a little longer. Eventually, however, the board will deteriorate from sun, sand and water damage and must be discarded. Unfortunately, these boards are not biodegradable or recyclable.&nbsp;Traditionally made from materials such as polyurethane foam or fibreglass, surf boards use thermoset composites, a leading engineering material that is used in a wide variety of applications including sports equipment. &nbsp;Most standard surfboards weighing approximately 6lb produces an estimated 10lb of waste material, nearly double the weight of the board. The waste accumulated during the manufacturing and end-of-life processes adds to the ecological and environmental crises around the world.&nbsp; &nbsp;<h3>A rising tide of waste</h3>While these effects are perhaps invisible to a large segment of the population, what is becoming increasingly visible is the plastic waste in the world’s oceans. Recycled surfboards – made from a supposedly eco-friendly manner to reduce waste – leave behind plastic scraps and residue which leach toxic chemicals into the air and water. Surfboards made from microbeads kill marine life, bleach coral reefs and adds to polluted oceans and beaches.&nbsp;Even other eco-friendly, sustainable products such as boards made from recycled plastic, bamboo and other biodegradable material come with their own set of problems such as how to safely discard them at end-of-life.&nbsp; &nbsp;<h3>The greener wave</h3><figure class="image image_resized image-style-side" style="width:30%;"><img class="image_resized" src="https://www.cms.adityabirla.com/uploads/motion_blur_of_abstract_curling_green_ocean_wave_40bed1e422.webp" alt="motion-blur-of-abstract-curling-green-ocean-wave.webp"></figure>Aditya Birla Group’s patented Recyclamine technology is a measure of their commitment to protecting the planet. Thermoset composites are converted into thermoplastics through a targeted recycling process. This enables the continuous retrieval, reuse and repurposing of all the components of the composite.
