U.S. Consulate General Mumbai and Habitat for Humanity India build home in Karjat

Mumbai: U.S. Consul General Mr. Peter Haas, along with 14 Consulate volunteers, joined volunteers from the Aditya Birla Group to build a Habitat for Humanity India home in Borichiwadi village, outside of Karjat, on 22 February 2014. At the launch of the event, Consul General Haas said, “I am very pleased to have had the opportunity to join this important project, which helps build the people-to-people ties so important to the U.S.-India relationship.”

Habitat for Humanity India began operations in 1983 in Khammam, Andhra Pradesh, and is among Habitat's largest programmes in the Asia-Pacific region. After the Jimmy Carter Work Project in 2006, where 100 homes were built by more than 3,000 volunteers during a five-day build in Lonavala, Habitat India launched the 'IndiaBUILDS - A World of Hope campaign', to support 100,000 families.

Habitat India works in partnership with local, grassroots and non-governmental organisations, and micro finance institutions throughout India to provide housing to families in need. Habitat India has served over 45,000 families across 17 states in India.
