The lifeblood of the land

There is no life without water. Aditya Birla Group understands this and prioritises responsible water management, understanding its critical role for a healthy planet.

Through a risk-based approach, the Group has made significant progress in water conservation.

  • Reduced water consumption

6 sites achieved a staggering reduction of over 50% in freshwater use.

A further 12 sites witnessed reductions between 10% and 50%.

  • Water positive leadership

Companies like UltraTech Cement have achieved a remarkable 4.17 times water positive status in FY23.

ABFRL has reached water positive status and currently recycles/reuses an impressive 68% of their water.

  • Healthy ecosystems & combating desertification

By reducing water extraction, the Group helps maintain natural water levels in rivers and wetlands, fostering healthy habitats for diverse plant and animal life. Their water stewardship efforts also contribute to combating desertification, protecting fertile land.

The roots of a healthy world

Understanding the vital role that forests play in the health of our planet, the Group has transcended simply reducing deforestation, to actively champion a greener future through large-scale tree planting and critical forest conservation initiatives.

  • Growing Forests

Companies like Grasim are leading the charge, planting a significant 1.2 lakh trees in FY23, adding to their impressive total of over 7 lakh trees planted.

  • Restoring Degraded Landscapes

Through afforestation and reforestation efforts, Aditya Birla Group breathes new life into degraded areas, promoting biodiversity and overall environmental health.

  • Critical Forest Conservation Leadership

Birla Cellulose spearheads efforts to conserve over 70% of a vast 1.1 million hectares of boreal forest. This not only protects biodiversity but also prevents soil erosion and maintains the land's natural fertility.

A land teeming with fauna

A healthy planet teems with life, and Aditya Birla Group recognises the importance of protecting its magnificent diversity. Their "No Net Loss" approach to biodiversity ensures that their activities have minimal impact on wildlife habitats.

  • Protecting Wildlife Habitats

Companies like Grasim lead the way in protecting critical wildlife habitats, such as the Olive Ridley Turtle habitat in Odisha.

  • Species Observation & Conservation

The group's Biodiversity Management Plans (BMPs) track threatened species populations. This data allows for targeted conservation efforts, ensuring the well-being of vulnerable wildlife.

  • Habitat Restoration

Recognising the importance of healthy habitats, restoration of degraded areas is a priority. A prime example is UltraTech Cement's Sewagram unit's 5-hectare grassland habitat restoration project, providing essential resources and shelter for native fauna.

Aditya Birla Group's environmental efforts strive to serve as a testament to the transformative potential of responsible business practices. The Group's focus on water conservation, nurturing forests, and fostering species conservation is inspired by a scientific approach and a collective responsibility to proactively nurture our planet.
