A paradigm shift towards clean, inexpensive and unlimited energy is taking place across the globe. On Earth Day 2025, Aditya Birla Group joins the league of responsible businesses uniting behind renewable energy under the theme ‘Our Power, Our Planet’, with the ambitious aim of tripling the global generation of clean energy by 2030. India aims to achieve 50% of its energy requirements from renewable sources by 2030 and the Group’s businesses are contributing to this shift - both, in India, and world-over.
Towards Net Zero
Aditya Birla Group aspires to reach Net Zero Carbon Emissions by 2050 across all its businesses. Prioritising renewable energy adoption is an integral part of the Group’s sustainability strategy. Here’s a snapshot of our sustainability initiatives and milestones in FY2024:
Ultra-clean Cement
UltraTech Cements is recognised as a Climate Change leader by the CDP and is a part of EP100 initiative of energy-smart companies as well as being committed to Climate Group’s RE100 initiative
- Share of green energy in FY2024 is 22%
- 612 MW of renewable energy (increased by 77%)
- 278 MW of Waste Heat Recovery System (increased by 32%)
- Aims for 85% green energy by 2030
- 100% by 2050
Grinding Units going green:
- Arakkonam Cement Works and Ginigera Cement Works operate on 100% Green Energy
- Transition to 100% renewable energy by jetty attached to Ratnagiri Cement Grinding Unit
- Awarpur Cement Works has installed Floating Solar Photovoltaic panels in two water reservoirs of 3600 sq mts with ˜7600 solar panels
Hydro for Hindalco
With an aim to make its smelters green, Hindalco entered into a commercial agreement with Greenko Group, one of India’s largest renewable energy companies, for the provision of RTC carbon-free electricity for its Odisha smelter for 25 years.
This initiative will enable an annual reduction of 680,000 MT of CO2 through 100 MW of captive power, enhanced to 350 MW in the future.
The project is slated to be a world-first for the aluminium sector and, Hindalco could become the first aluminium company in the country to use RTC's carbon-free power for smelting.
Hindalco achieved 60% installed renewable energy capacity as of FY24
Spotlight on Sustainable Fashion
Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail (ABFRL) is deploying solar rooftops, biomass-based briquettes and RE tech such as solar street lights; adopting new and innovative RE technologies such as hybrid technology, a combination of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and wind turbines; and optimising internal and external lighting, installing LED lights and other efficient equipment, and designing new facilities and stores using green concepts.
- Energy consumed from renewable sources rose from 69 trillion joules in FY19 to 119 trillion joules in FY23
- 68% of energy at owned facilities derived from renewable sources
- ˜26 lakh units of solar power generated
Flax to Fuel
JayaShree Textiles – a subsidiary of Grasim – is India’s largest manufacturer of linen from the flax plant. At its Rishra factory, the team is converting flax dust and small fibre into boiler fuel in the form of briquette by innovatively employing cattle feed manufacturing machines.
Reducing:
- Scope 1 GHG Emissions
- Fossil fuel consumption by ˜1000MT
- 179.4 MT landfill waste and 250t CO2 in FY24
