Carbon Black
Carbon black refers to engineered carbon nanoparticles that are fused together to form unique 3-dimensional aggregates. In its pure state, carbon black manifests as a fine black powder, produced through the controlled process of partially burning and pyrolyzing oil residues or natural gas at elevated temperatures.
Aditya Birla Group has a formidable presence in the Carbon Black sector through its flagship, Birla Carbon. Birla Carbon has maintained its leadership in the Carbon Black Industry for over 160 years with its global manufacturing presence and significant production capabilities. It is one of the largest manufacturers and suppliers of high-quality carbon black additives.
Playing a crucial role, carbon black contributes to the strength, attractiveness, durability, and safety of various everyday products. These encompass essential items such as tyres, automotive weatherstrips, and belts, plastic components, coatings, inks, and sealants. For instance, tyres lacking the reinforcement of carbon black would not be capable of covering a distance exceeding 100 miles!
Functioning as a pigment, carbon black provides the desired colour strength across applications ranging from electronic enclosures to automotive coatings and household appliances. Additionally, carbon black enhances the UV durability of rubber and plastic goods, ensuring their operational lifespan spans several decades.
Incorporated as an electrically conductive additive, carbon black imparts antistatic, electro-dissipative, or conductive properties to insulative rubber and plastic materials. This, in turn, ensures safety, protection, and reliability in diverse applications such as mining, electronic packaging, and wire and cable manufacturing.
With an annual production capacity of over 2 million tonnes, Birla Carbon’s footprints extend across 13 countries and 5 continents in each of the key markets of Asia, Europe, and America.
