The
AV Group is a member of the pulp and fibre business
of the Aditya Birla Group.
Moving
from an initial partnership beginning 1998 to produce
dissolving rayon grade wood pulp at AV Cell in Atholville, Canada,
the AV Group has acquired another pulp mill,
St. Anne Nackawic in New Brunswick, Canada, in 2006, now christened
AV Nackawic.
AV
Cell Inc.
This
operation gives the Group access to good quality
softwood / hardwood pulp, a critical input for its
viscose staple fibre (VSF) business. The mill, whose
entire production is exclusively for the Group's
captive consumption, supplies 119,000 tonnes of
dissolving grade chemical pulp to its VSF units
in India, Thailand, Indonesia and China. Tembec
Inc, a leading integrated forest product company
in Canada retains a nominal 5 per cent holding.
AV
Nackawic Inc.
The Aditya Birla Group and Tembec Inc. have,
through a joint venture in 2006, acquired the St.
Anne Nackawic Pulp Mill which was christened AV Nackawic
Inc. The Aditya Birla Group holds 95 per cent
in the joint venture, with the balance 5 per cent
with Tembec Inc. This marks the second acquisition
by the joint venture, strengthening the Group's
strategic hold on the most important raw material
for its VSF operations.
On
acquisition, commercial production commenced at
the St. Anne Nackawic pulp mill in New Brunswick
to produce paper grade wood pulp. A project to
convert the mills output into dissolving
grade pulp is in the final stages. The entire produce
of DG pulp from AV Nackawic will be consumed within
the Groups fibre units in India, Thailand,
Indonesia and China.
The
mill produced 800tpd of paper grade hardwood
pulp and on conversion will produce 540tpd of
dissolving grade pulp after stabilisation.
