<p>When Indian start-ups Pixxel and Digantara launched their satellites on a SpaceX Transporter-12 rocket from the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California on January 14, 2025, they heralded a transformative new chapter in India’s space odyssey.&nbsp;</p><p>By putting three of its Firefly satellites in orbit, Pixxel became the first private spacetech company in India to have its own constellation of the world’s highest-resolution commercial hyperspectral satellites. Digantara, too, scored a first by launching Space Camera for Object Tracking or SCOT, the world’s first commercial situational space awareness (SSA) satellite for the surveillance of objects as small as 5cm orbiting the earth.</p><p>Founded by Anirudh Sharma, Tanveer Ahmed and Rahul Rawat, Digantara intends to make space operations safer by writing a new playbook for space navigation and traffic management given the growing congestion in space. Meanwhile, Pixxel’s founders Awais Ahmed and Kshitij Khandelwal are building an advanced diagnostic system for Earth that will redefine how we understand and safeguard our planet and its resources.</p><p>Giving wing to their path-breaking flight is the Aditya Birla Group’s venture capital firm, Aditya Birla Ventures (ABV). Founded by Aryaman Vikram Birla, ABV invests in new age businesses of tomorrow that are led by outstanding founding teams.&nbsp;</p><p>ABV acquired a minor stake in Digantara’s Series A1 funding round in 2024. And it has backed Pixxel with an investment in 2024.&nbsp;</p><p>Private sector participation in the Indian space economy has been on an upswing ever since the central government founded the Indian National Space Research Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) in 2020. There are <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://pib.gov.in/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=2027137">nearly 200 space start-ups in the country today</a>. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) expects the country’s space economy to <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.business-standard.com/industry/news/india-aims-10-share-in-global-space-economy-in-10-yrs-isro-chief-somanath-124082001084_1.html">grow from around $9 billion today to $45 billion in 10 years</a>. India has <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://theprint.in/ground-reports/digantara-pixxel-are-inspired-by-elon-musk-this-will-drive-india-inc-space-dreams/2468683">a mere 2 per cent share of the global commercial space market currently.&nbsp;</a></p><p>Space start-ups like Pixxel and Digantara are eager to tap this opportunity with support from investors such as Aditya Birla Ventures.</p><p>Incidentally, both Awais, who is Pixxel’s CEO, and Kshitij, its CTO, founded the company in 2018 as students at the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS Pilani). They were part of the student satellite team on campus and collaborated with ISRO scientists on projects. Awais secured a master’s degree in mathematics in 2019, while Khandelwal graduated the same year with a BE in Electrical and Electronics Engineering.</p><p>Five years later, Pixxel has soared into space. With the Fireflies in orbit, the Pixxel team is “excited to map the invisible, detect the undetectable and pave the way to protecting our planet’s beauty and its future,” states Awais in a LinkedIn post. Incidentally, most of the team members had never built a satellite before.</p><p>The compact but powerful Fireflies – three more are slated to go up in orbit shortly – will beam down earth-sensing data that has not been available at this level of resolution and frequency before. That’s because their hyperspectral imaging technology takes what Awais calls an “MRI of the planet”.&nbsp;</p><p>The Firefly constellation is designed to provide global coverage every 24 hours and deliver critical climate and Earth insights with near real-time data collection. Pixxel’s in-house next-gen Earth observation studio, Aurora, analyses this data for applications in sectors ranging from agriculture, energy and mining to infrastructure and defence. The start-up has over 60 clients already, including US space agency NASA, India’s Ministry of Agriculture, mining major Rio Tinto, and British Petroleum.</p><p>Like Pixxel, Digantara too was born in a college dorm in 2020. Inspired by their friend Tanveer, who ran a satellite club in his Bengaluru college, Anirudh and Rahul, both engineering students at Lovely Professional University in Punjab, decided to follow suit and build a nano-satellite under an ISRO Student Satellite Launch Programme. After a piece of debris crashed into their student satellite, the trio began to consider how to make space safer.&nbsp;</p><p>The result was Digantara, a new age space cartographer. Their SCOT satellite is already setting new benchmarks in space technology and precision. Digantara intends to use a network of nanosatellites and cloud-based analytics platform to ensure the safety of spacecraft. By tracking every single object in orbit, the founders are also building maps for space with their pioneering Space – Mission Assurance Platform or Space-MAP. In short, they are developing the foundational infrastructure for safer space operations and space traffic management.</p><p>Pixxel and Digantara have taken their first step in space, paving the way for other spacetech start-ups. It’s just the beginning of their space odyssey, one that <a href="/businesses/sectors/venture-capital/">Aditya Birla Venture</a> will continue to propel.</p>

Aditya Birla Ventures propels SpaceTech flight of Pixxel and Digantara

<p>A personal tragedy can often become the catalyst for positive action. Here is one such inspirational story of a village administrative officer, who became a force-for-good after he lost his brother and launched a free ambulance service in his memory</p><p>Durai Prithviraj can still recall the despair and helplessness that engulfed him when his younger brother met with a road accident in Madurai in 2011. His brother met an untimely end as an ambulance failed to reach the accident spot on time. Worse, Prithviraj struggled to find an ambulance or hearse to transport his brother’s mortal remains to his hometown of Aruppukottai in Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu.</p><p>“It was too costly, making me wonder, ‘What can a poor person do [in such a situation],” he recounts.</p><p>The incident had a lasting impact on Prithviraj, who works as a village administrative officer.</p><p>Determined not to let his brother’s death go in vain, he spent the next eight years trying to build up his savings. Finally, by 2018, he had saved enough money to buy a second-hand van and convert it into an ambulance to serve the poor.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><div class="video-responsive"><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/TgF85iBKMOY" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></div><p>&nbsp;</p><p>“For the past seven years, I’ve been serving people through this no-fee ambulance. The only payment we ask for is love, and that’s a fee everyone should pay,” says Prithviraj, who runs three free ambulances in his hometown today. In fact, his ambulances played a crucial role in saving lives and ferrying the deceased during the Covid-19 pandemic, when he even lent one ambulance to the Virudhunagar Medical College Hospital.</p><p>Prithviraj does not just provide free ambulance services though. Through Rajesh Udhavum Karangal, the non-profit that he founded in his brother’s memory, he also provides free meals to the underprivileged residents of Aruppukottai, feeding over 1.5 lakh people to date, besides adopting orphans and burying over 100 unclaimed bodies. Donations and minimal fees from those who can afford to pay for the ambulance service are his sources of funding.</p><p>“What medicines and doctors can't achieve, compassion and humanity can. <p>Even in the remote villages of Sunderbans, there are stories of good to be found. Like this one about Dr Arunodoy Mondal whose Sujan Clinic offers a lifeline to the poor villagers of Hingalganj and its neighbourhood for free.&nbsp;</p><p>For the last 25 years, 71-year-old Dr Arunodoy Mondol has travelled 160km from Kolkata to Hingalganj in the Sunderbans every Saturday without a single break. Rising before dawn, he first catches a train from Dum Dum Cantonment Railway Station to Hasnabad village, from where he takes an auto to Lebukhali. This is only the halfway mark in his journey though. From Lebukhali, he takes a boat ride across the river to Hingalganj and then travels the last 12 km by a motorcycle.&nbsp;</p><p>After travelling for six hours, he arrives at Sujan Clinic, the free medical facility that he founded back in 2000. By the time he reaches there, hundreds of poor residents of Hingalganj area, including local villagers, fishermen and tribals, are already waiting to be treated by him. Many of them have walked miles to reach the clinic in this poorly connected region.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><div class="video-responsive"><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/co9MXR4ZS80" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></div><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Having grown up in the Sunderbans, Dr Mondal or ‘Sunderban ke Sujan’ as he is popularly called, is no stranger to their suffering. He recalls how as a child, he used to see people suffer from disease and die of snake bite because of the lack of medical facilities, poor transportation connectivity and sheer poverty. “I saw both mother and child die during childbirth many a time. That’s when I decided to take modern medical services to the poor people of Sunderbans,” he recounts.</p><p>Determined to alleviate their suffering, he studied medicine at Calcutta National Medical College and worked at the Dr B C Roy Memorial Hospital for Children before setting up his own practice in 1980. The desire to serve the people of Sunderbans kept niggling his consciousness, though.&nbsp;</p><p>So, in 2000, he started Sujan Clinic and began consulting patients and providing medicines for free at his family home in Hingalganj. When he ran out of space as patient numbers grew, he used his life savings to buy a piece of land and build the two-storey Sujan Clinic. Ever since, he and his small team have become a lifeline for the thousands of patients that they treat for free each year.&nbsp;</p><p>Dr Mondal’s dedication and selfless service was recognised by the Government of India in 2020, when he was awarded the Padma Shri. He has not rested on his laurels, though, and continues to travel and tend to patients at Hingalganj every weekend. “I want to continue the work I started in 2000 till the last day of my life. Steering the automotive industry towards sustainability

<p>Satya Ranjan Doloi is a security guard but what he safeguards today is more precious than mere brick and mortar. Satya has a deep love for knowledge and books. And that has changed his life as well as that of many of the poor children in his neighbourhood.&nbsp;</p><p>Hailing from a village in the Sundarbans, Satya could not study or get a college degree because of family financial troubles. He came to Kolkata looking for work and joined <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/kolkata/53-year-old-security-guard-runs-10000-book-library-at-n-kol-park/articleshow/98289609.cms">Jagat Mukherjee Park in north Kolkata as a security guard in 2010.&nbsp;</a></p><p>When he found an unoccupied room at the park, he took a bold step. Satya put in Rs 2,700 of his own meagre salary , and set up the room as a home for a tiny collection of books and magazines. Over time, he built shelves from discarded wood and bought fans and lights. He worked multiple jobs, and the earnings went into building up his informal library.&nbsp;</p><p>Udyaan Library has now grown to 15,000 books, a significant collection. “No one around here sells old books anymore, they donate it to me,” says Satya. “They know I look after the books like my own children. I wanted them to stop begging and I wanted to give them a way to learn,” says Satya.</p><p>Indeed, Satya’s library serves as the embodiment of a community resource: Books are donated by well-wishers, and books are lent free to underprivileged children.&nbsp;</p><p>“‘I want them to read.
