Farmer Suresh Kumar grows potatoes on his 3-acre farm in Paamabhipur village in Uttar Pradesh. Like many farmers, he was troubled because he found that his costs were going up. Suresh was spending more money on fertilisers, but the amount he earned as yield from his land was not increasing. The prospect of debt loomed large.
To help farmers like Suresh, Indo Gulf Fertilisers, a unit of Grasim Industries, initiated the process of developing fertilisers which are customised to the soil type and the crop’s nutrient requirement. The idea is to reduce excessive use of a single nutrient and balance it with other nutrients that are important for the crop’s growth.
The company developed the Customised Fertilisers Grade (CFG) for cash crops like corn, potato and sugarcane. The use of CFG leads to better crop quality and higher yields of 20-30% while reducing costs.
Suresh Kumar was quick to understand the benefits of CFG and he started with a small trial. After the trial, Suresh realised that he could earn Rs. 25,000/acre more for his potato crop by way of higher yields and lower costs. Able to earn for a better life for his family, Suresh has been using and recommending CFG to fellow farmers.
Over the past five years, Indo Gulf Fertilisers’ CFG has improved the lives of many farmers by reducing their farming costs and debts, and continues to make more farmers aware of the need for a more balanced use of fertilisers.
