Mr. D Bhattacharya is the Vice-Chairman of Hindalco Industries, the metals flagship of the Aditya Birla Group; and the Vice-Chairman of Novelis Inc., world leader in flat-rolled products and a 100 per cent subsidiary of Hindalco. Mr Bhattacharya is also the Chairman of the Business Review Council (BRC) for manufacturing businesses of the Aditya Birla Group; and Chairman of the Board of the Aditya Birla Science & Technology Company (ABSTC), the Corporate Research and Development Centre for the Group. Mr. Bhattacharya also chairs the Capital Request Evaluation Committee (CREC) for the Group's businesses; this Committee evaluates and recommends on new capex initiatives.
Before assuming these Group-wide responsibilities, Mr. Bhattacharya was the Managing Director of Hindalco Industries Limited from 2003 to 2016. Under his visionary leadership, Hindalco has transformed from being an India-centric, predominantly aluminium company to a global, non-ferrous metals major.
Prior to joining the Aditya Birla Group, Mr. Bhattacharya had a 30-year long career in Unilever, where he held various senior level positions across its global operations. He led the Chemical business of Unilever in India before joining the Aditya Birla Group as the Managing Director of the erstwhile Indo Gulf Corporation Limited in 1998.
His stellar leadership was recognized by the Aditya Birla Group with the 'Aditya Birla Ratna Award' in 2015, which was preceded by a string of awards and recognition from the external world, such as the 'IIM-JRD Tata Award 2011 for Excellence in Corporate Leadership in Metallurgical Industries'; the 'Fray International Sustainability Award 2011'; the 'Qimpro Gold Standard (Business) Award 2010'; the ‘LEXI Award 2007 for Strategic and Leadership Excellence’; the prestigious 'India Business Leader of the Year Award 2005' and the 'Asia Corporate Citizen of the Year Award 2005', both from CNBC. He is also the recipient of the 'Corporate Excellence Award 2010' for his outstanding leadership and innovative approach in ensuring global excellence of the Indian Aluminium Industry at the 14th International Conference on Non-Ferrous Metals; and the 'Global Leader Award' by CEO Magazine in 2016. IIT Kharagpur conferred upon him the 'Distinguished Alumnus Award - 2012' on the occasion of the Institute's Foundation Day in its Diamond Jubilee year.Mr Bhattacharya earned a B. Tech (Hons) in Chemical Engineering from IIT, Kharagpur and B. Sc. (Hons.) in Chemistry from Presidency College, Kolkata.
